Aussie Nick Kyrgios seems to have made yet another difficult start to a year with his recent withdrawal from an ATP 250 tournament at Melbourne Park on Tuesday. Kyrgios, 26, has cited asthma as the reason for his withdrawal.
Kyrgios is set to arrive in Sydney later this week – but at his lowest rankings status since 2014. His withdrawal means a major setback to his ability to retain a spot on the main ATP Tour. It also mans he will rank outside the top 100 for the first time in eight seasons. Currently ranked 115th, he’s likely to digress even further down the ladder by the time the next official rankings are released next week.
Melbourne is well known for posing significant problems to asthmatics because of its climate.
Seen in action on Tuesday had been Aus Open champion Naomi Osaka, Wimbledon star Andy Murray, and 20-time Grand Slam champion Rafa Nadal. Fans however missed Kyrgios, who despite his rankings, continues to enjoy major appeal because of his entertaining personality.
The next couple of weeks will be a crucial time for the Australian. Unless he manages to find at least some momentum and mojo in Sydney, he’ll face returning to Melbourne seriously short of match-fitness.
But Kyrgios has surprised the world of tennis on more than one occasion. After limited playing time leading up to last February’s delayed Australian Open, the Aussie made waves when he was able to make it all the way into the 3rd round of the tournament.
