Hamilton Cuts Vettel Down To Size
Lewis Hamilton on Sunday completed his 200th Grand Prix in the style of a true winner – his first place trimming down Sebastian Vettel’s overall championship lead to only 7 points. It was a battle until the last for Hamilton, having had to survive extreme onslaughts by Vettel and Ferrari. The win is the Briton’s fifth victory for the season, and the third Belgian Grand Prix title of his career. Hamilton now has his sights set firmly on next weekend’s Italian Grand Prix – with a victory effectively placing him in first place overall for the very first time this season.
Sebastian Vettel finished in second place, followed by Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo in third and Kimi Raikkonen in the second Ferrari, in fourth place. The second Mercedes finished in fifth place, with Valtteri Bottas at the steer.
Speaking to the press, Hamilton described the weekend as being an important one for himself as well as for team Mercedes. He went on to say that Vettel had put up a valiant fight, but that he (Hamilton) had done what he had come to do.
Bad Luck Continues For Max Verstappen
No mention of a major Grand Prix event would be complete without keeping tabs on Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. The Dutch fans were notably disappointed after Verstappen’s sixth early departure out of twelve outings as a result of yet another power failure.
Rumours have it that Verstappen’s patience is wearing very thin with Red Bull racing. 19 year old Verstappen strongly suggested that he was reconsidering his future with Red Bull, after Sunday’s retirement. Speaking to the press, Verstappen said that this (referring to the repeated early retirement from recent races) should not happen in the scope of a top team, and that what had happened was beyond belief.
He went on to say that he was not able to stomach too many more early retirements by no fault of his own, before seriously considering a major change. Verstappen has been linked to Ferrari and the possibility of moving over, but remains under contract with Red Bull up until 2019.
The Dutchman started in fifth position in Sunday’s race, but was forced to retire as a result of yet another power failure already on lap number eight. The disappointment was no doubt all the more intense as a result of it having happened before 80,000 Dutch fans come to support the Dutch national.
