Christian Horner Positive About F1’s Future

February 9, 2022 by

F1 will in 2022 focus anew on supporting its Race Director, Red Bull boss Christian Horner has said. The controversial end to the 2021 season in Abu Dhabi means F1’s race management structure will likely undergo several changes in the coming months.

Australian Michael Masi, the sport’s current Race Director, has been taking a lot of flack over his handling of last year’s title-deciding decision regarding the safety car – a decision that ultimately allowed Max Verstappen to beat Lewis Hamilton to the title. And while the Aussie remains in his position for the moment, the FIA’s inquiry into the series decider remains ongoing.

According to Horner, whether or not Masi ends up being replaced, F1’s Race Director clearly needs much more support than what has been the case in the past. He also said new FIA president Mohammed bin Sulayem has been putting a whole lot of focus on this issue.

An increased focus, and improved Race Director support, will likely see the role better handled by future incumbents, he explained.

Ex-FIA president Jean Todt has in the meantime confirmed having had regular contact with Masi since the 2021 finale in Abu Dhabi. He has expressed concern over the impact the controversial ending to the season has been having on the Aussie.

But according to McLaren boss Zak Brown, the sport has learnt from everything that transpired at last year’s finale. He however voiced huge frustration regarding the delay in the FIA’s inquiry into the events on the day.
