England fast-bowler Mark Wood says his Indian Premier League (IPL) contract feels a bit like a “computer game”.
Wood and wife Sarah lived quite an unreal experience when their plans to go away for a weekend were interrupted by the IPL auctioneer falling ill on stage. This paused the proceedings and prevented the pair from setting off to a wedding they were supposed to attend.
Also, since their son Harry had fallen asleep on the couch for an unexpected nap, the pair had no other option but to watch the auction in silence from their living room. Wood said after a quiet start to the action, the proceedings suddenly picked up speed – and so did the numbers.
Wood said the announcement of the final bidding amount had been a truly weird experience and one that seemed almost unreal – not unlike transfers on “Football Manager”. Still, once signed, the situation gets very real very fast, he added.
For the Englishman from Ashington, the cash-rich IPL tournament is a chance to set up his family financially. But more than the monetary benefits, he says he’s also very much looking forward to meeting his new teammates at a start-up franchise, his upcoming reunion with coach Andy Flower, someone he says he admire greatly, and, of course, the unique opportunity to develop his game under pressure.
Since the start of 2019, Wood has claimed 38 wickets during 22 games away from home. He also completed the Ashes Tour with six for 37 in Tasmania.
