Ben Stokes, so say the Kiwi’s teammates, is the best cricketer in the world. All-rounder Stokes during England’s second test-win against the West-Indies, performed the type of all-rounder match-winning greatness only witnessed once or twice in a century. All of which has led the feisty player’s mates to believe that they may very well be playing in the presence of true greatness.
England captain Joe Root goes a step further, referring to Stokes as “Mr. Incredible”. And that’s probably the best possible description for man who acted as the inspiration behind an incredible 113-run victory on Tuesday (Monday, local-match time).
Stokes in a performance nothing short of remarkable, scored a superb 78 not out, not to mention the two wickets he managed to take after having already racked up a stellar 176 during his first innings. This all is according to captain Joe Root what makes of the all-rounder Kiwi a cricketer at the top of his career, at the top of his game, and at the “peak” not only of his own powers, but also of world cricket.
Stokes is a player that must be savoured, appreciated, and respected, said Root. Not too many all-rounders can be seen walking through international cricket’s doors – and according to the English captain, there exists “absolutely no reason” why the Kiwi knockout-player can’t keep performing consistent to how he has been performing so far.
The forever-humble Kiwi has in the meantime tried to steer the attention away from himself by drawing the focus instead towards the group as a whole. Commitment to one another, said the Kiwi, is what creates a truly great environment for younger players to come into. And committed to one another these players most definitely are.
