The entries for this year’s World Rowing Championships are in, and the World Rowing Federation, FISA, has announced that over 900 athletes from 62 countries will be taking part in the event, which is taking place in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
The teams will fight it out in Plovdiv’s Maritza River Water Sports Centre with the hope of earning the coveted title of World Championship. There will be 14 Olympic events, six international, and nine para-rowing boat classes.
This year’s event is the culmination of a long and difficult season which saw two-time Olympic winner Mahe Drysdale lose his spot when he was out-paced by fellow Robbie Manson. Manson is now the favourite for the Plovdiv races, but has a strong contender in Germany’s Oliver Zeidler. Young rower Zeidler made headlines when he bested top sculler Tim Ole Naske during the qualification rounds for this year’s World Championships.
In the women’s singes, Swiss Jeannine Gmelin is the top pick this year, having been at the top of her game all season. Not far behind her is Ireland’s Sanita Puspure and Austria’s Magdelena Lobnig, who are both vying for the top spot.
Meanwhile, the men’s pair has over 25 entries, and the vote is out for who will be taking home the winning medals. For the women’s pair, Kerri Gowler and Grace Prendergast from New Zealand are the top contenders, with Canada’s Calleigh Filmer and Hillary Janssens as their biggest challengers for the title win.
