Tokyo 2020 Marathons Gets Earlier Start

April 19, 2019 by

Organisers of the Tokyo Olympic marathons that are set to take place in 2020 have recently confirmed a schedule that shows the races will start at 06:00 local time to avoid the extreme heat that officials are expecting. Japanese medics have warned that running too late in the morning could lead to a number of heat-related injuries, and even death from heatstroke.

The extreme weather is something that officials have taken seriously when planning out the 2020 Games, with chief executive officer Toshiro Muto saying that heat and even typhoons are cause of concern and a major issue.

The men’s 50km race is set to start at 05:30 in the morning, while schedules for rugby sevens, mountain biking, and the triathlon have all been shifted to try and avoid the higher temperatures as much as possible. When the country last hosted the Olympic Games in 1964, they were held in October to try and avoid of Japan’s harsh summers.

It’s a big change to the last games that were held in Rio in 2016, when runners were able to start at 09:30 local time when temperatures were at a much milder 19 degrees Celsius. Organisers expect that 21 gold medals will be won during the “Super Saturday” events at the beginning of August, while another 26 are expected for the next day on “Golden Sunday” when the men’s 100m final will be taking place, along with the women’s marathon and men’s singles tennis.
