Ireland have officially qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games sailing regatta for the women’s single handed event. The place was secured by Lough Derg Yacht Club’s Aisling Keller, who had finished in 46th place for the Laser Radial World Championship.
The sailor, who was from County Tipperary, claimed the seventh of the 10 nation places that were first decided during the championship. Aoife Hopkins took 48th place, joining Keller for the qualification criteria for next year’s event in Japan. Talking about the qualification, Hopkins stated that it had been a really long road to that moment, and that they had been working for a year toward this event particular, and even longer for the Olympic qualification. She added that it was really nice to come away with the outcome that they had wanted from the start.
The world championship was won by Anne-Marie Rindom of Denmark who had led for most of the race going into the final day of the gold felt event. Rory Fitzpatrick, head coach of Irish Sailing, stated that qualification was something that had to eventually happen, and that it became the focus at the end of the regatta. He added that they would next be going to the Olympic venue in Enoshima, and now that they knew that they will be participating, they would have to make the most of it.
The sailing venue for next year’s regatta will host representatives in all events next month for a test series.
