Despite it being 25C in central Tokyo, snow was falling at the venue for the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The snow wasn’t result of freak weather, but rather the latest innovation tested by organisers of the 2020 event, who are hoping to try and keep the extreme heat at bay during a time when temperatures are at their highest in summer.
A total of 300kg of artificial snow was being sprayed across the stands at the Sea Forest Waterway venue, with the organisers testing whether it was a viable solution to keeping the temperature down during the Games. The city often sees temperatures that exceed 35C and 80% humidity during the hottest month of July, and many are worried that spectators and athletes alike will suffer, especially for events taking place over the course of a full day.
Sea Forest Waterway is the host for both the Olympic and Paralympic rowing and canoeing events, where half of the 2000 seats will remain uncovered after organisers decided that a full roof was going to prove too costly. For the testing, members of the organising committee filled the stands for a five-minute snow machine trial while a test event took place for canoe sprints. Unfortunately, they quickly discovered that the results weren’t what they were hoping for: the temperature before the test was at 25.1C, and was exactly the same after the test finished. Organisers are expected to continue trialling new methods of keeping the Games cool.
